Wine stain on a sofa: how to treat it before it sets

Wine is easiest to lift while it's still wet — once it dries and oxidises, the same treatment is far less effective.

What to do

  • Blot immediately with a clean, dry or lightly damp cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward so it doesn't spread.
  • Cold water first — for a fresh stain, cold water alone lifts a surprising amount before you reach for anything stronger.
  • Test any cleaning product on a hidden patch of the fabric first, since not every upholstery fabric reacts the same way.

What to avoid

  • Do not rub the stain — rubbing pushes wine deeper into the weave and can damage some fabric pile.
  • Do not apply heat to dry the area (a hairdryer, direct sun) — heat can set the tannins in red wine, making the stain much harder to remove afterwards.
  • Avoid mixing cleaning products — combining, for example, an alcohol-based stain remover with bleach can damage the fabric or produce harmful fumes.

When to call a professional

If the wine has already dried, or the sofa is a delicate fabric like velvet or silk-blend, professional treatment reduces the risk of a permanent mark or fabric damage from a DIY attempt on set-in wine.
